SOTWD: Lightspeed Champion - Everyone I Know is Listening to Crunk
Lightspeed Champion is the love-child of former Test Icicle member Devonte Hynes and several of the band members of Bright Eyes. This isn't a Saddle Creek record, but it certainly could have been. Falling Off The Lavender Bridge dropped in January, and has been picking up quite a bit of good press along the way. Musically it's indie pop, with just enough folk sensibility to make it legitimate. Lyrically it's about as clever as anything I've heard this year. The track below is my current favorite...

SOTWD: MGMT - Electric Feel
If you've ever wondered if a couple of white guys from Brooklyn can sound like Prince, the answer is yes. However, MGMT don't mimic Prince, nor do they channel him...they simply play electronic/psychedelic funk that seems effortless, and they play it well. Their most recent record, Oracular Spectacular, is quality, and when my friend Chris included Electric Feel on a recent mix, I was hooked.

SOTWD: Jens Lekman - A Postcard To Nina
Jens Lekman's Night Falls Over Kortedala is one of my favorite records of last year, both because of his catchy, self-effacing lyrics, and the melodies that instantly ingrain themselves in your brain. Not enough people write songs like that anymore. This album feels like a classic the first time you listen to it, and this track in particular is one that I play over and over. It's probably the best song ever written about a guy pretending to be a girl's boyfriend so her conservative father won't discover that she's actually a lesbian.

SOTWD: Chromeo - Momma's Boy
In this track, electrofunk duo Chromeo offer a reminder of what was best about early 80's pop rock: the synthesizers. Or was it the over-the-top vocals, or the wacky guitar riffs? Regardless of your personal affections, Momma's Boy offers it all. Also, this song just plain rocks.

SOTWD: The Black Kids - I'm Not Gonna Teach Your Boyfriend How To Dance With You
I think the Black Kids might just be the greatest thing to have ever come out of Jacksonville, Florida (no apologies to Pat Boone or Fred Durst). These indie rockers make fun music...music you can dance to, even if you're just an uncoordinated white kid. If this song's not already on your iPod, it should be. Make it happen, then dance! dance! dance!

SOTWD: Andrew Jackson Jihad - People II: The Reckoning
This songs cuts straight to the core of the human condition, perhaps without even meaning to. The Arizona trio, who are difficult to label without using largely non-descriptive terms like "acoustic/folk/punk," released People Who Can Eat People Are the Luckiest People in the World earlier this year, and each song is worth hearing. Will everyone like this record? No way. But would you really want them to? Of course not.

SOTWD: Vampire Weekend - Oxford Comma
Be warned, this track (along with the entire album) has the ability to stay in your head for days. You'll wake up singing it, hum it through breakfast and lunch, and ten bucks says it'll be waiting for you once you close your weary eyes. These New York boys know how to develop a hook, and then sink it in you.
